Looking Forward and Upward

As we begin another year, we need to reflect on how we are going to approach it from God’s perspective.

This morning I would like to use the teaching method of opposites.

In the apostle Paul’s letters to the Philippians and Colossians we find some opposites.

Each of these have their pluses and minuses.

What are they?

Looking Forward vs. Looking Backward
Philippians 3:12-14

Looking Backward

Minuses – In bondage to past experiences, unwilling to change; unable to be an overcomer.

Looking Forward

Pluses – Freedom from the past; willing to change; able to experience victorious living in Christ.

Looking Upward vs. Looking Downward
Colossians 3:1-11

Looking Upward

Pluses – Living for eternity; growing spiritually; putting on the new person.

Looking Downward

Minuses – Living for the things of this world; not growing spiritually; putting on the old person.
